📵 why you can't focus (and how to fix it)
Welcome to Week 5! This module is all about one thing: focus.
Why it’s hard, how your phone messes with it, and how to take back control 🧠
😵💫 why focus is so hard today
- 🧠 Our attention span dropped from 12 seconds (2000) to 8.25 seconds (2023) — yes, that’s worse than a goldfish 🐠
- 📱 Most people check their phones 144x per day — about once every 10 minutes!
- 🧾 We now consume as much info in one day as someone in the 1700s did in their entire life
- ⚠️ Your brain wasn’t built for this. It was made for deep work, not dopamine scrolling
👀 two types of attention
- 🎯 Top-down attention = Focus by choice (studying, deep work)
- ⚡ Bottom-up attention = Reactive (notifications, sounds, movement)
Too much bottom-up attention trains your brain to be distracted
Even “phantom vibrations” are a thing — your brain thinks your phone buzzed when it didn’t!
🔋 your brain = a battery
- 🔌 Constant task-switching and notifications drain it fast
